Velocity has three ways to connect a rep to an order: territories, ownerships, and overrides. This article explains how they relate to each other, which one wins when more than one applies, and how the rate is chosen once the rep is known.
Precedence
Assignment is resolved separately for each Commission Program on the order, not once for the order as a whole. An order whose line items span two Programs can pay two different reps.
Within each Program, Velocity checks the three mechanisms in a fixed order and stops at the first match:
Override on the order's customer, company, or location, for this Program.
Ownership on the order's customer, company, or location, within this Program's team.
Territory, matching the order's postal code against the team's map.
What each one covers
The three are scoped differently, and that difference decides which one you should reach for:
An override applies to one account in one Program. Two Programs on the same team can treat the same account differently.
An ownership applies to one account across a whole team, so it covers every Program that team runs. An account has at most one owner per team, and each team's ownerships are independent of each other.
A territory belongs to the team's map and applies to every Program on that team.
When an ownership applies, the order's postal code is ignored for that team. The map still decides assignment on every other team.
Postal code overrides are not a fourth mechanism. They change which postal code the territory lookup uses, so they only matter when assignment reaches step 3. See Postal Code Overrides.
Account Priorities
An order can carry up to three accounts: a customer, a company, and a location. Ownerships and overrides can be set on any of them, so Velocity needs to know which account to read first.
Account Priorities, under Settings > Commission Settings, is a reorderable list that sets that order. It applies to ownerships and overrides alike. The default order is customers, then locations, then companies, and you can change it at any time.
Velocity takes the first match it finds working down that list. If a customer-level override and a company-level override both exist, the one higher in Account Priorities is applied and the other is ignored.
Paying up the hierarchy
Matching an order to a rep does not commission only that rep. Commission is paid up the team's hierarchy, the one you define on the Team Structure card: the matched rep is commissioned, and so is every rep above them, each at their own level's rate.
This is why a territory or an ownership assigns a single rep but produces several commissions on the order. It is also the main practical difference between an ownership and an override, covered below.
Territories
Territories are the default mechanism and cover most orders. Each rep at the bottom level of a team is assigned a set of postal codes on that team's map, and orders shipping into those postal codes are commissioned to that rep and the reps above them. Territory maps are edited under Teams > Territories > Launch Editor, and changes take effect only after you select Publish. See Assigning Team Territories.
Velocity takes the postal code from the order's shipping address. If the order has no shipping address, it uses the billing address. A postal code override on the order replaces both.
Ownerships
An ownership assigns an account directly to a rep on a team, independently of geography. Use it when a rep owns a relationship that the map would not give them, such as a national account or a customer outside their territory.
An ownership substitutes the owning rep for whoever the map would have chosen, then commission is calculated as normal from there, paying up that rep's branch of the hierarchy at each level's usual rate.
Example
Your map pays orders shipping to Florida to the Florida rep, and above them the East manager and the national manager.
Your California rep brings in a new customer based in Florida. Without an ownership, that customer's orders would commission the Florida branch of the hierarchy.
Give the California rep an ownership on that customer, and their orders commission the California rep, the West manager, and the national manager instead, at the same rates as any other order. The map is unchanged and every other Florida customer is unaffected.
Managing ownerships
Ownerships live in the Ownerships section of the Velocity app. The Customers, Companies, and Locations buttons switch between account types, and each team has its own column, so the same account can be owned by a different rep on each team. Use Import and Export to manage ownerships in bulk.
An ownership changes visibility as well as commission. The owning rep sees the account in the Rep Portal, along with its addresses and orders, and can order on its behalf. So do the managers above them on that team. Reps whose visibility is set to see everything are unaffected either way.
Enabling Automatic Ownership under Settings > Commission Settings gives a rep ownership of every customer, company, and location they onboard in the Rep Portal.
A team with no Commission Program has nothing to pay, so ownerships on that team have no effect on commission. They still affect what the owning rep can see.
Overrides
An override replaces the commission calculation entirely for one account within one Program. It ignores the territory map, any ownership, the team's level rates, and any negotiated rates, and pays out using its own rules instead.
Overrides are of type Fixed Percentage: you name the reps to pay and the rate each one receives. Because you name them, an override does not pay up the hierarchy. Only the reps listed on the override are commissioned, so managers above them receive nothing unless you add them explicitly.
An account can have one override per Program. See Commission Overrides.
How the rate is chosen
Once the rep is known, the rate comes from the Program, unless an override supplied one.
For each rep in the hierarchy, Velocity uses:
the rep's Negotiated Rates, if any have been set for them on that Program
otherwise, the rate configured for their level in that Program
Within a level, a product rule applies to the products it names, and Default rule covers everything else in the Program. See Creating Programs.
When no commission is calculated
Some orders produce no commission regardless of assignment:
The order was cancelled.
The order is a rep's own personal order, placed against the customer record linked to their rep account.
The order's currency does not match the Program's currency.
No line item on the order belongs to a Program.
Require Territory Override is enabled and the order has no postal code override.
For orders that should have been commissioned but were not, see the troubleshooting steps in Automatic Commissions for Orders.
