Velocity MCP

Connect Claude, ChatGPT, and other AI tools to your Velocity data.

The Velocity MCP server connects AI tools such as Claude and ChatGPT to your Velocity data. Once connected, you can ask about your reps, teams, ownerships, and commissions in plain language, and have the AI tool make changes for you. Every action in the Velocity API is available to it as a tool.

api-docs.velocity.shop

Availability

The Velocity MCP is part of the Premium plan. You can see your current plan, and change it, under Pricing in the Velocity app.

Server URL

Every AI tool connects to the same address:

https://api.velocity.shop/mcp

You can also copy it in the Velocity app: open Settings, find MCP on the Integration Settings card, and select Copy URL.

Connecting an AI tool

There is no key to copy. You approve each connection from inside Shopify Admin:

  1. Add a custom connector in your AI tool, name it Velocity, and paste the server URL.

  2. Start the connection. Shopify Admin opens in your browser. Sign in and choose your store if asked.

  3. Review the request on the Velocity MCP page and select Connect.

Where to add the connector depends on the tool:

  • Claude: Settings > Connectors > Add custom connector, then Connect.

  • ChatGPT: turn on Developer mode under Settings > Connectors > Advanced, then create a connector with the server URL.

  • Claude Code: run the command below, then run /mcp, select velocity, and choose Authenticate.

claude mcp add --transport http velocity https://api.velocity.shop/mcp

Other AI tools work if they support remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP with OAuth sign-in. The guide lists the exact requirements.

What a connected tool can do

A connected AI tool can do anything the Velocity API can: read reps, teams, ownerships, and commissions, and also create, update, and delete them.

Approving a connection gives that AI tool the ability to change and delete your Velocity data, not only read it. Only connect tools you trust, and check what the tool plans to do before letting it make changes.

Example prompts

Paste any of these into your AI tool once it is connected. Swap in your own team, rep, and customer names.

Commission reporting

Show total commission by rep for last month,
split by program, as a table sorted highest first.
Which commissions this week came from an override
instead of ownership or territory? List the order,
customer, and rep.
Compare each rep's commission this quarter with
last quarter and flag anyone down more than 20%.

Reps and teams

List my teams with their levels and how many
reps are on each.
Show the hierarchy of the Sales Team: who
reports to whom at each level.
Which enabled reps have no email address or
no Rep Portal login?

Ownerships

Who owns Acme Medical on each team?
List every customer, company, and location
Jordan Lee owns, grouped by team.

Making changes

These prompts change data. Most AI tools ask before running a change, so read what it plans to do first.

Make Jordan Lee the owner of Acme Medical
on the Sales Team.
Disable these reps: Sam Rivera, Alex Chen.
Show me the list before you make the change.
Create a Rep Portal login for Taylor Brooks
using their email on file.

Managing connections

Each connection belongs to the staff member who approved it and the AI tool they used. Under MCP on the Integration Settings card, Current connections lists every connection on your store with its Client, when it was Last refreshed, and who it was Approved by.

Select Revoke to disconnect one. The AI tool loses access right away. Any staff member can revoke any connection on the store, including one approved by someone who has since left. Connections stay listed, and can still be revoked, if your plan changes.

Limits

Each connection can make 60 tool calls per minute.

MCP and API keys

The MCP server and the Velocity API share the same data and actions, but they sign in differently. AI tools connect through the approval flow above, while your own code uses an API key. An API key does not work with the MCP server, and an MCP connection cannot be used to call the API. Connecting or revoking an AI tool never changes your API keys.
